Heart attack, or Myocardial Infarction, is a condition where blood supply to a part of the heart is decreased suddenly. This causes injury or death of the muscle fibres in that region.
The decrease in blood supply usually occurs due to narrowing of a coronary artery. Coronary arteries are arteries that supply the heart. Narrowing of the artery occurs due to formation of atheromatous plaques, which are deposits of fat in the artery.
These plaques may rupture and cause formation of a blood clot around them. This whole process narrows the artery to such an extent that blood flow to the heart can decrease.
Symptoms of a heart attack are sudden severe constricting pain over the heart. This pain may radiate towards the neck or left arm.
The pain is associated with palpitation, sweating, increased or decreased heart rate, dizziness and fainting, and shortness of breath. A patient with these symptoms should immediately be taken to a hospital for treatment.
